Third baseman Jackie Robinson cracked 4 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Sal Maglie
tossed a complete game at Ebbets Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers belted the
hapless Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 11 to 1.
Robinson was really 'in the zone'. He cracked a solo homerun in the 1st
inning, blasted a solo shot in the 3rd inning, cracked a two-run shot in the
4th inning and delivered a solo blast in the 6th inning. Brooklyn banged out
12 hits on the night.
The victory was credited to Maglie(9-8) who went the distance, allowing 1 run.
The loss was charged to Ron Kline(11-18). He allowed 5 homeruns in 7 innings
of work.
'I felt great out there tonight,' Robinson said, 'Maybe I should make a
regular habit of getting to bed on time!'
I've chosen the year I was born for my next SOM Baseball as-played replay. I've had the cards for quite a few years but am just now, finally doing a complete season replay on the computer while using the cards. As usual, I'll try to manage the Detroit Tigers to an AL Pennant.

1956 AL Standings
September 1, 1956
The Detroit Tigers continue to dominate the AL as the calendar turns to September. Detroit holds a commanding 13.5 game lead over 2nd place Chicago. Detroit went 18-11 in August. The White Sox (20-13) and Boston Red Sox (17-12) were only able to keep pace with the league leaders. Cleveland (12-18) had their worst month of the season and the New York Yankees (15-16) continued their uninspiring play.
Unless something very dramatic occurs, the Detroit Tigers and Brooklyn Dodgers are a lock to begin World Series play on October 3rd.

Ray Boone blasted 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Yankee Stadium as the
indomitable Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 9 to 6.
Boone was unconscious all day. The New York fans hated to see him approaching
the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He hit a bases-empty
home run in the 2nd inning, tripled in the 6th inning, clubbed a three-run
home run in the 7th inning and blasted a solo shot in the 9th inning. The
New York batters didn't put up a fight in the bottom of the 9th.
The winning pitcher was Paul Foytack(11-9) who allowed 6 runs in 7 innings.
Walt Masterson gained credit for his 1st save. Tom Sturdivant(5-4) suffered
the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 6 and 1/3 innings of work.
'It's almost like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Boone said. 'Whenever I
would swing, the ball found the sweet spot.'

Roger Craig completed the game without help from the bullpen at County Stadium
where the very talented Brooklyn Dodgers beat the reeling Milwaukee Braves 13
to 6.
Pee Wee Reese had a big day at the plate. He doubled in the 1st inning,
lofted a three-run bomb in the 3rd inning and slapped a base-hit in the 7th
inning. Brooklyn finished with 19 hits in the victory.
Craig(15-6) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 6 runs. Bob
Buhl(10-10) ended up with the loss. Brooklyn now has a record of a league
leading 78-42. Charley Grimm was unhappy with his club's recent performance.
'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a
while.'

1956 AL Game Stories
August 16, 1956
In a bit of a rarity, all 4 games scheduled in the AL today ended with complete game shutouts for the pitchers on the winning teams. New York's Whitey Ford had the best outing, throwing a 1-hitter against the potent Boston Red Sox. Chicago's Dick Donovan flirted with a no-hitter against the Kansas City Athletics, but finished allowing 3 hits. Baltimore's Mike Fornieles also threw a 3-hit shutout and Detroit's Frank Lary's win was his 22nd of the season.
