1956 NL News Recap and League Leaders

May 15, 1956

Brooklyn's Duke Snider and New York's Willie Mays have gotten off to good starts in the 1956 season. Snider (7 HR, 26 RBI) and Mays (7 HR, 22 RBI) are in the mix of slugging leaders in the NL. Cincinnati's Ed Bailey leads the league with 8 HR and Chicago's Dee Fondy is leading the league in hitting with a .406 average. There are a few pitchers that have won as many as 4 games but Milwaukee's Lou Burdette stands out with his 4-0, 2.30 ERA record.

Kansas City pitcher Lou Kretlow threw a 1-hitter today against the Baltimore Orioles and the Athletics came away with a close 1-0 victory. Lou walked 5 but didn't give up a hit until the 6th inning. Kansas City scored a run in the 7th and that was all they needed while Kretlow was throwing his gem.

Lou Kretlow didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning at Municipal Stadium as
the Kansas City Athletics beat the Baltimore Orioles by the count of 1 to
0.
 
Kretlow(3-3) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Baltimore
hitters.  He allowed just 1 hit and 5 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA
from 5.06 to 3.95.  The right-handed Kretlow lost his no-hit bid when Dave
Philley singled with two outs in the 6th inning.  Kansas City managed only 5
hits on the night.  
 
Jim Wilson(2-2) was tagged with the loss.  He gave up 1 run and 4 hits in 7
innings.

One day after being pounded by the Chicago White Sox, the Detroit Tigers returned the 'favor' by pummeling the Sox 19-2.  Tiger 1st baseman Earl Torgeson (pictured) led the 24 hit attack by going 4 for 6, with 2 homeruns and 4 RBI. Virgil Trucks went the distance for Detroit, picking up his 2nd win of the season. In the battle for 1st place, Detroit takes 2 of the 3 games versus Chicago and is now 1/2 game ahead, but trail in winning %, .722 to .696.

Earl Torgeson cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Virgil Trucks allowed Bucky
Harris to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Detroit Tigers
smashed the overmatched Chicago White Sox, 19 to 2.
 
Torgeson enjoyed a great day at the plate.  He cracked a solo homerun in the
1st inning, slapped a base-hit which scored a run in the 4th inning, cracked
a solo homerun in the 5th inning and doubled which brought home a run in the
7th inning.  Detroit lit up the scoreboard in the 4th inning when they had 9
runs on 8 hits and the 7th inning with 4 runs on 4 hits.  Detroit simply wore
out the Chicago pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings.  
 
The win went to Trucks(2-0) who allowed 2 runs in the game. Billy Pierce(4-1)
was hit with the loss.  He allowed Detroit 11 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings of
work.  
 
'I was really seeing the ball today,' Torgeson said 'I wish it was always this
easy.'

May 12, 1956

The Detroit Tigers won their 10th straight game by defeating the Chicago White Sox 6-5 yesterday in the first game of a 3 game series. Today, the White Sox put an end to the streak with a resounding 15-4 battering of the Tigers. Led by George Kell (pictured), Chicago had 20 hits in the game and Dick Donovan went the distance on the mound. Chicago now has a .5 game lead on 2nd place Detroit heading into tomorrow's rubber match game of the series.

George Kell had 4 hits and 4 RBI and Dick Donovan pitched a complete game at
Briggs Stadium as the Chicago White Sox, running on all cylinders, ripped the
Detroit Tigers by a large 15 to 4 margin.
 
Kell had a big day against Detroit.  He doubled in the 3rd inning, bombed a
two-run dinger in the 6th inning, delivered a one-base hit bringing in a run
in the 7th inning and doubled resulting in a run in the 9th inning.  Chicago
provided plenty of action in the 6th inning which saw them score 3 runs on 3
hits and the 9th inning tallying 3 runs.  The Chicago offense was great,
scoring in 8 of the 9 innings.  
 
The victory was credited to Donovan(4-0) who went the distance, allowing 4
runs. Billy Hoeft(1-2) was the losing pitcher.  He got hit pretty hard,
allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.

May 9, 1956

The Detroit Tigers took both games of a two game series against the Washington Senators, winning todays contest 3-0. Paul Foytack shutout the Senators on 3 hits, picking up his 1st win of the season. The Tigers have now won 9 in a row and head home for a 16 game homestand. Detroit has tied the Chicago White Sox for 1st place in the AL. The White Sox will be the first team on the Tiger homestand, coming to town for a 3 game series, and large crowds are expected.

Paul Foytack blanked Washington allowing just 3 hits and third baseman Ray
Boone had 3 base hits as the blistering-hot Detroit Tigers defeated the
Washington Senators 3 to 0 at Griffith Stadium.
 
Foytack(1-1) was simply too much for the Washington batters.  He surrendered
only 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 8.44 to 4.58.
Detroit had only 6 hits for the night.  
 
Camilo Pascual(1-4) suffered the loss.  Chuck Dressen was obviously impressed
with the pitching of Foytack, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there
tonight.  We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for
him.  I just hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'

My Detroit Tigers are in the midst of a 10 game road trip. After dropping the 1st game in NY, Detroit has won 7 games in a row. They're off to Washington now for 2 games against the Senators before heading home. The Tigers have been getting a good combination of hitting and pitching during the recent streak and are now in 2nd place in the AL, 1 game behind the front running Chicago White Sox.

Gil Hodges homered and had 4 RBI as the sizzling Brooklyn Dodgers won in
dramatic fashion over the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 8 to 6 at
Sportsman's Park.
 
Brooklyn won the game with a rally in the 9th inning plating 3 runs utilizing
2 base hits.  After two outs Pee Wee Reese got things rolling when he ripped
a base-knock.  Duke Snider stepped up next and he reached on an error.
Hodges then rifled a three-run blast.  Both teams ended up with 10 hits on
the afternoon.  
 
Clem Labine(1-0) went 3 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Labine
was helped out by Ken Lehman who recorded his 1st save.  Tom Poholsky(1-2)
was charged with the loss.  
 
'The only way this one could have been better', said Labine, 'was if we had
played it at home.'
