1956 NL Standings at the All Star break

The Brooklyn Dodgers still lead the NL as MLB takes a break for the All Star Game. The Milwaukee Braves have been battling the Dodgers all season and currently are in 2nd place. The St. Louis Cardinals are the only other team in the NL with a winning record and hold the 3rd spot in the standings.

Cincinnati Reds rookie outfielder Frank Robinson leads the NL in BA as baseball takes a break for the annual All Star Game. Two of his teammates, Ted Kluszewski leads the league in HR and Gus Bell leads in RBI. Despite the good hitting resume, the Reds are sub .500 due to an ineffective pitching staff. Milwaukee's Lew Burdette and Brooklyn's Don Newcombe are the top 2 pitchers at the break.

Philadelphia 1st baseman Stan Lopata hit 3 homeruns and picked up 5 RBI as the Phillies defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 8-6. It was in the 2nd game of a doubleheader, right before the All Star break, that Lopata flexed his muscles and put on a show for the home town fans. The homers, all off Dodger starter Sal Maglie, now give Stan a total of 16 on the season.

First baseman Stan Lopata slammed 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Philadelphia
Phillies topped the Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 8 to 6 at Shibe
Park.
 
Lopata had a big day at the plate.  He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in
the 1st inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 4th inning
and clubbed a two-run home run in the 6th inning.  Philadelphia had 11 hits
for the afternoon.  
 
Duane Pillette(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 and 2/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Sal Maglie(3-3) was tagged with the loss.  He was touched
for 3 homeruns in his 8 innings of work.  
 
'Actually, I didn't feel that comfortable at the plate today' Lopata said
after the game.  'Despite that, I'm happy with the results!

1956 AL Game of Note: Cle. @ Det.

July 4, 1956

There were plenty of fireworks in the first game of a 4th of July doubleheader between the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers at Briggs Stadium. The Indians won the slugfest against the Tigers 17-13. The 30 runs were the most in MLB this 1956 season. Herb Score ended up with the win for Cleveland even though he gave up 12 runs in 7 innings of work. Former Tiger Vic Wertz led the Indian attack with 4 hits, 3 of them doubles. 4 errors by Detroit contributed to 7 unearned runs.

Vic Wertz had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Briggs Stadium where the Cleveland Indians
beat the Detroit Tigers by the score of 17 to 13.
 
Wertz was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors.  He doubled in the 2nd inning, doubled
knocking in a run in the 4th inning, doubled in the 6th inning and hit a
single resulting in a run in the 7th inning.  Cleveland bats were hot in the
7th inning when they had 6 runs on 6 hits and the 8th inning which saw them
plate 6 runs on 3 hits.  Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 6
different innings was still not enough for Detroit to come away with the
victory.  
 
Herb Score(7-4) was the winner allowing 12 runs in 7 innings. Paul
Foytack(6-4) absorbed the loss.  He got hammered, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks
in 6 innings.  
 
Score was humble when questioned about his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty
confident in my pitches this afternoon.  But, I had great support behind me
and I just threw what was called.  That was an extremely well called game!'

The calendar turns to July and the Detroit Tigers are beginning to put some distance between themselves and other contending teams in the AL. The Tigers followed a 22 win May with a 20 win June. The 2nd place Cleveland Indians had another good month but dropped to 7 games behind the league leaders.
