1956 AL Standings

August 1, 1956

The 1956 season has reached the dog days of summer and the Detroit Tigers have opened up a double digit lead at the top of the AL. Detroit went 23-9 in July, best in MLB. Their hitting attack has remained at epic proportions. The Tigers are hitting .301 as a team and have scored an incredible 710 runs, over 200 runs more than the next highest team. Detroit has averaged 7.24 runs per game while allowing 4.36. Cleveland, Chicago, and Boston have all played good, solid baseball, but all three will have a tough time trying to catch the juggernaut Detroit team. The 5th place New York Yankees also have a winning record, but the 'real life' League Champions have been a disappointment to their fans and posted a 14-15 record in July.

1956 NL Standings

August 1, 1956

The calendar turns to August and the Brooklyn Dodgers now lead the NL by a comfortable margin. The Dodgers had their best month of the season in July, going 21-10. The Milwaukee Braves and St. Louis Cardinals both fell off the pace, going 15-16 and 13-14 in July, but still hold 2nd and 3rd place in the NL. The Cincinnati Reds finally got things rolling last month, going 21-12, but their slow start may have sabotaged their title hopes as they find themselves 14 games behind the league leaders.

1956 NL News Recap and League Leaders

August 1, 1956

Chicago's Ernie Banks and Atlanta's Henry Aaron are tied on top of the NL's BA leaders. Cincinnati's Ted Kluszewski had a big month at the plate in July, hitting 12 homeruns and driving 31 runs.  Brooklyn's Duke Snider continues to hit at a high pace and his teammate Don Newcomb leads all NL pitchers in Wins and ERA.

First baseman Ted Kluszewski knocked 4 homeruns and had 7 RBI and Art Fowler
allowed Birdie Tebbets to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the
Cincinnati Reds ballclub embarrassed the New York Giants by the count of 15
to 1.

Kluszewski enjoyed a great evening at the plate. Every time he came up in the
latter innings, the crowd was on their feet cheering. He popped a two-run
clout over the fence in the 1st inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the
3rd inning, lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 5th inning,
hit a bases-empty home run in the 7th inning and banged out a single in the
8th inning. Cincinnati lit up the scoreboard in the 7th inning when they had
7 runs on 4 hits. Cincinnati simply wore out the New York pitching staff,
scoring in 6 different innings.

The victory was credited to Fowler(8-5) who went the distance, allowing 1 run.
Johnny Antonelli(3-9) was the loser. He allowed 3 homeruns in 6 innings of
work.
