1956 MLB All Star Game

July 10, 1956

In an exciting All Star game at Griffith Stadium in Washington, the AL defeated the NL 6-5 in extra innings. Both teams emptied their benches in a game that saw the NL tie things up with a 4 run 9th inning. The game went to the bottom of the 10th where the AL loaded the bases, then scored the winning run on a single by Boston Red Sox Jackie Jensen.

27,684 fans were treated to a fine game at Griffith Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The American League All Stars won by
the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.
 
The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings.  Finally, American League
pulled the game out in the 10th inning.  Mickey Vernon tripled.  George Kell
stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk.  Charlie Maxwell then was walked
intentionally to load the bases.  Jackie Jensen followed next and he singled
giving American League the victory as 27,684 happy fans celebrated wildly.
American League had 14 hits for the game and National League had 9.  
 
Mike Garcia(1-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory.
Vinegar Bend Mizell(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.  He gave up 2 hits
and no walks in 1 inning.
