The Detroit Tigers squared off against the New York Yankees in New York today and got pounded 11-6. Yankee 1st sacker Bill Skowron (pictured) was a one man wrecking crew. He hit 3 homeruns and drove in 6. Hank Bauer added a 2 run homer for the home team and Ray Boone hit one for the visitors from Detroit. The Yankees led 5-1 after the 3rd inning but the Tigers scored 5 runs in the 4th, taking a 6-5 lead and chasing starter Whitey Ford. NY scored 2 in the bottom of the 4th, retaking the lead, then added 1 in the 5th and 3 in the 7th. Rip Coleman, who came on in relief of Ford, threw 5 scoreless innings to get the win for New York.

Bill Skowron knocked 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the New York Yankees topped
the Detroit Tigers by a score of 11 to 6 at Yankee Stadium.

It seemed that Detroit pitching was serving up softballs for Skowron to hit.
He clubbed a solo home run in the 2nd inning, lost the ball over the fence
for three runs in the 3rd inning and hit a bases-empty home run in the 5th
inning. New York had 11 hits overall, while Detroit had 8.

Rip Coleman(2-0) allowed no runs in 5 innings, and picked up the victory.
Steve Gromek(1-2) was tagged with the loss. He surrended 3 homeruns in his 3
and 2/3 innings.

'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Skowron said 'next
time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'

1956 AL Standings

May 1, 1956

The first month of the season is over and the Chicago White Sox find themselves in 1st place in the AL. It is a short month, and the Sox have had a number of games rained out, but they're also off to a good start in the 1956 season. My Detroit Tigers are playing .500 ball right now and hitting doesn't look like it'll be a problem this season. Their pitching however is very suspect. The Tigers have lost 3 games, so far, that they've held the lead in after 7 innings. The New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles have gotten off to the most surprising starts this year, for completely different reasons. The Orioles have started very strongly compared to their actual record while the Yankees have gotten off to a very disappointing start compared to their actual start.

Wally Post cracked 3 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds bested the
Chicago Cubs 7 to 4 at Crosley Field.

Post had a big day at the plate. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the
2nd inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 4th inning, stroked a
one-base hit in the 6th inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 8th inning.
Joe Nuxhall(2-1) got help from Hal Jeffcoat who pitched a perfect ninth and
was credited with his 1st save.

Jim Davis(0-3) took the loss in relief. 'It's just about getting in a good
hitting position and just going out there and being prepared,' Post said.
'You try to hit in your own capacity and not do too much. I just try to have
a good approach, day after day, game by game, and pitch by pitch.'

Chicago fell behind quickly as the Milwaukee offense came through in the first inning plating 2 runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Johnny Logan was the sparkplug when he tripled. 1956 prep work

Photo File | sports photos and collectibles, Baseball, Football ...The Detroit Tigers finished in 4th place in the AL in 1956. A 21 year old Al Kaline (pictured) was in his 3rd full season in the Major Leagues playing for Detroit. He won the batting title in 1955 with a .340 BA. The '56 Tigers were a very good team with lots of hitting and average pitching, but they'll be hard pressed to overcome the New York Yankees.
The New York Yankees were a very good team that season and won the AL Pennant by 9 games over the 2nd place Cleveland Indians. Yankee outfielder Mickey Mantle won the Triple Crown in 1956 with a .353 BA, 52 HR, and 130 RBI.
In the NL, it was a different story. There was a very close 3 team pennant race between the Brooklyn Dodgers, Milwaukee Braves, and Cincinnati Reds. The Dodgers prevailed and won by 1 game over the Braves, 2 games over the Reds. Pitcher Don Newcombe 27-7 led the Dodgers to the pennant along with the hitting of Duke Snider (.292, 45, 101) and Gil Hodges (.265, 32, 87). Hank Aaron (.328, 26, 92) helped lead Milwaukee and rookie Frank Robinson (.290, 38, 83) was one of the big reasons Cincinnati was in the hunt.
