The Detroit Tigers opened the season at home yesterday and defeated the Kansas City Athletics 11-3. Other opening day winners included Washington, Baltimore and Chicago.

The Baltimore Orioles came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 3 to
1.
Baltimore scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning plating 3 runs on 2
hits. Fred Marsh led off and started the attack as he drew a walk. Bobby
Adams followed and he slapped a single, and an error was also committed.
Dave Philley then banged out a single. After an out was recorded, Tito
Francona came to bat and drew a walk to load the bases. Jim Pyburn stepped
into the box and drew a walk. One out later, Willie Miranda came to the
plate and drew a walk. Neither team was able to score until the 8th inning.
Don Ferrarese(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1 inning. George Zuverink
got the save, his 1st. Frank Sullivan(0-1) took the loss. Paul Richards was
all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a
beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there? You could
have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what makes
baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over 'til
its over.'

Billy Pierce completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Chicago
White Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians in 11 innings by the score of 4 to 2
at Comiskey Park.
The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Finally, Chicago prevailed in
the 11th inning. Nellie Fox led off the inning for Chicago when he ripped a
single. Larry Doby was next and he lifted one out of the park for a two run
home run giving Chicago the victory as 12,055 happy fans celebrated wildly.
Cleveland out-hit Chicago 9 to 6, but Chicago ended up with more runs.
Pierce(1-0) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Bob Lemon(0-1)
was given the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in 10 innings.
NEW YORK AT WASHINGTON

Camilo Pascual whitewashed New York at Griffith Stadium where the Washington
Senators beat the New York Yankees 6 to 0.
Pascual(1-0) pitched a solid game. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just
8 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Washington rapped out 10 hits for the
afternoon.
Don Larsen(0-1) was charged with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing
10 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.

They almost ran out of baseballs at Briggs Stadium as Detroit Tigers clobbered
the Kansas City Athletics pitching staff, scoring 11 runs while Frank
Lary(1-0)with effective use of the bullpen surrendered 3 runs to Kansas
City.
The game started off with Detroit taking the lead in the first with 2 runs
using 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Earl Torgeson began the Detroit
spurt when he drew a walk. Al Kaline came next and he tripled. Ray Boone
then lined a base-hit. Charlie Maxwell stepped in and he drew a walk. Bill
Tuttle was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Frank House added
to the rally and singled to load the bases. Detroit had a total of 8 hits
for the game.
Alex Kellner(0-1) was the loser. He struggled with his control issuing 8
walks in 4 innings.
