1956 AL Opening Day News

April 18, 1956

The Detroit Tigers opened the season at home yesterday and defeated the Kansas City Athletics 11-3. Other opening day winners included Washington, Baltimore and Chicago.

The final score,, was 3 to 1. Baltimore scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning plating 3 runs on 2 hits. Fred Marsh led off and started the attack as he drew a walk. Bobby Adams followed and he slapped a single, and an error was also committed. Dave Philley then banged out a single. After an out was recorded, Tito Francona came to bat and drew a walk to load the bases. Jim Pyburn stepped into the box and drew a walk. One out later, Willie Miranda came to the plate and drew a walk. Neither team was able to score until the 8th inning. Don Ferrarese(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1 inning. George Zuverink got the save, his 1st. Frank Sullivan(0-1) took the loss. Paul Richards was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over 'til its over.' CLEVELAND AT CHICAGO Indians......... 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 2 9 1 White Sox....... 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 - 4 6 1 Win:Pierce(1-0) Loss:Lemon(0-1) Homeruns- L.Doby(1st) Billy Pierce completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians in 11 innings by the score of 4 to 2 at Comiskey Park. The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Finally, Chicago prevailed in the 11th inning. Nellie Fox led off the inning for Chicago when he ripped a single. Larry Doby was next and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run giving Chicago the victory as 12,055 happy fans celebrated wildly. Cleveland out-hit Chicago 9 to 6, but Chicago ended up with more runs. Pierce(1-0) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Bob Lemon(0-1) was given the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in 10 innings. NEW YORK AT WASHINGTON Yankees......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 8 2 Senators........ 2 0 0 0 1 0 0 3 - 6 10 0 Win:Pascual(1-0) Loss:Larsen(0-1) Camilo Pascual whitewashed New York at Griffith Stadium where the Washington Senators beat the New York Yankees 6 to 0. Pascual(1-0) pitched a solid game. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 8 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Washington rapped out 10 hits for the afternoon. Don Larsen(0-1) was charged with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. KANSAS CITY AT DETROIT Athletics....... 0 0 0 0 0 2 1 0 0 - 3 7 2 Tigers.......... 2 3 0 2 0 2 0 2 - 11 8 0 Win:Lary(1-0) Loss:Kellner(0-1) Homeruns- C.Maxwell(1st) They almost ran out of baseballs at Briggs Stadium as Detroit Tigers clobbered the Kansas City Athletics pitching staff, scoring 11 runs while Frank Lary(1-0)with effective use of the bullpen surrendered 3 runs to Kansas City. The game started off with Detroit taking the lead in the first with 2 runs using 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Earl Torgeson began the Detroit spurt when he drew a walk. Al Kaline came next and he tripled. Ray Boone then lined a base-hit. Charlie Maxwell stepped in and he drew a walk. Bill Tuttle was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Frank House added to the rally and singled to load the bases. Detroit had a total of 8 hits for the game. Alex Kellner(0-1) was the loser. He struggled with his control issuing 8 walks in 4 innings.
