Eddie Mathews next to the plate and he smashed a two-run homer. That was all the offense they were to need. The pitchers took over after the 2nd inning as neither team was able to score again. Burdette(1-0) went the distance for the shutout. Bob Rush(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 9 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings. He served up 3 homeruns in his 8 innings. Birdie Tebbets was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'
