The slate of games scheduled in the AL on this last day of June featured some fine pitching performances. In Baltimore, the Boston Red Sox swept a doubleheader from the Orioles by identical 5-0 scores. Willard Nixon threw a 5-hitter in game 1 and Tom Brewer threw a 5-hitter in game 2. Meanwhile in New York, the Yankee's Johnny Kucks (pictured) shutout the Washington Senators 2-0 on 2 hits and in Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox won a 2-1 10 inning decision over the Indians.

Willard Nixon threw a complete game shutout at Memorial Stadium as the Boston
Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles by the count of 8 to 0.
Nixon(2-3) put on a good performance. He gave up just 5 hits and 3 walks in 9
innings. Boston had a total of 13 hits for the game.
Billy Loes(1-1) ended up with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and
4 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Second baseman Ted Lepcio went deep and had 3 RBI and Tom Brewer hurled a fine
complete game shutout as the Boston Red Sox outscored the Baltimore Orioles 5
to 0.
Brewer(9-3) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He allowed just 5 hits
and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 2.96 to 2.74. Boston and
Baltimore each finished the night with 5 hits.
Don Ferrarese(4-4) absorbed the loss. He pitched 6 innings allowing 5 hits
and 5 walks.
CHICAGO AT CLEVELAND

One run was the difference at Municipal Stadium as the Chicago White Sox
defeated the Cleveland Indians in 10 innings 2 to 1.
The score was tied at 1 after nine. Finally, Chicago pulled the game out in
the 10th inning. Les Moss delivered a one-base hit. One out later, Paul
Lapalme came to bat and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Jim Rivera then banged
out a single. Rivera took second on the throw. Nellie Fox was up next and
he drew a walk. Minnie Minoso was a strikeout victim, unable to help out.
Chicago took care of Cleveland with no trouble in the bottom of the 10th.
Lapalme(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. The loss was
charged to Ray Narleski(2-2) in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 2 hits in 1
inning.
WASHINGTON AT NEW YORK

Johnny Kucks allowed 2 hits while blanking Washington as the New York Yankees
pulled out a win over the Washington Senators by a score of 2 to 0 at Yankee
Stadium.
New York scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning plating 2
runs. Billy Martin led off and got things going when he drew a walk. Norm
Siebern struck out, unable to help the rally. Mickey Mantle then cleared the
fences for a two-run home run resulting in a mighty exciting win for New York
and the 43,235 home town fans in attendance. New York banged out 7 hits on
the afternoon.
Kucks(5-7) was credited with the shutout. The loss was charged to Chuck
Stobbs(4-8). He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 7 hits and 2
walks.
DETROIT AT KANSAS CITY

Johnny Groth had 4 hits and 4 RBI and Alex Kellner went the distance as the
Kansas City Athletics outscored the Detroit Tigers 6 to 5.
Kansas City drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
plating one baserunner using 3 hits. Detroit had a chance in the 9th but
they came up short.
The win went to Kellner(1-5) who allowed 5 runs in the game. Paul Foytack(6-3)
absorbed the loss. Bucky Harris was in a contemplative mood after the tough
loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to
some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones
that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'
