1956 NL Game of Note: St. L @ Brn.

Brooklyn Dodger pitcher Don Newcombe became the first 10 game winner in the NL this season by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1. Newcombe allowed 1 run on 4 hits, walked no one, and struck out 8 while improving his record to 10-3. Newcombe leads NL pitchers with a 2.33 ERA and is 4th in K's with 68. With the win, Brooklyn retakes 1st place by 1/2 game over 2nd place Milwaukee.

Don Newcombe had a strong outing at Ebbets Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat
the St. Louis Cardinals 3 to 1.
 
Brooklyn scored 2 runs in the decisive 4th inning.  The biggest moment was
provided by Roy Campanella who electrified Ebbets Field when he banged out a
single plating two runs.  St. Louis made it exciting in the 9th, but they
were unable to push the needed runs across.  
 
The victory went to Newcombe(10-3) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Herm
Wehmeier(6-4) was tagged with the loss.  With this win, Brooklyn has a 35-20
record.  They have been 6-4 lately.  With the loss, the St. Louis ballclub's
record is 34-25.
