1956 Wrap Up

Even though my Detroit Tigers were swept by the Brooklyn Dodgers, I have to consider my 1956 AsPlayed Replay a resounding success. My goal in replays is to always try to get my team to win the pennant, and they did.
The Tigers performed way above expectations, finishing 22 games better than their actual record. Coupled with the actual 1956 AL Champion New York Yankees' underperforming by 12 games, the Tigers waltzed to the pennant with ease. Detroit's hitting attack was by far the best in my 1956 MLB replay. They scored runs at an incredible pace and their pitching was good enough to finish with 104 Wins. Chicago, Boston and Cleveland all finished within a few games of their actual records but proved no match for Detroit.
Frank Lary (29 Wins), Al Kaline (.306BA, 32HR, 148RBI), Ray Boone (,335, 31, 124), Charlie Maxwell (.324, 26, 125) and Harvey Kuenn (.377, 12, 96) led Detroit to the pennant. SOM gave the AL MVP award to Frank Lary but I would have given it to Kaline by a small margin. Lary also received the AL Cy Young award. Chicago's Dick Donovan was the only other 20 game winner in the AL and NY's Mickey Mantle led the league in HR with 51. The following is a list of the 1956 Award Winners:

Over in the NL, the Brooklyn Dodgers ran away with the pennant. I was expecting a close pennant race as in 'real life', between the Dodgers, Milwaukee Braves and Cincinnati Reds. While Brooklyn played a few games above their actual record, Milwaukee and Cincinnati played well below expectations. There were 3 20 game winners in the NL: Brooklyn's Don Newcombe (25), Milwaukee's Lew Burdette (20) and Philadelphia's Robin Roberts (20). Newcombe got the NL Cy Young Award and his teammate Duke Snider was NL MVP (.309BA, 42HR, 138RBI). The following list is the 1956 NL Award Winners:

October 7, 1956

In winning the 1956 World Series the Brooklyn Dodgers swept the Detroit Tigers in 4 games. Brooklyn starting pitchers were able to keep the Tiger's bats quiet the first 3 games and they got 3 complete game victories. Game 4 was a slugfest, but it was the Dodgers who out-slugged the Tigers. Overall, Brooklyn outscored Detroit 25-14. Gil Hodges was named the World Series MVP. 1956 World Series Game 4: Brooklyn Wins the Series!

October 7, 1956

Jackie Robinson - ThingLinkThe Brooklyn Dodgers are the 1956 World Series Champions! The Dodgers defeated the Detroit Tigers 9-5 to sweep the Series. Detroit was a slight favorite heading in the World Series due to their record hitting and scoring during the regular season. But it was Brooklyn that out hit and out pitched the Tigers. In game 4 today Brooklyn got out to an early 2-0 lead. Detroit's bats finally woke up in the 4th inning scoring 5 runs and chasing Dodger starter Don Newcombe. Red Wilson hit a 3-run homer and Al Kaline added a 2-run shot for the Tigers. But Brooklyn came right back in the top of the 5th inning scoring 6 runs and retaking the lead 8-5. The big hit was Roy Campanella's 3-run homer. Campy hit 2 homeruns in the game and had 4 RBI. The Brooklyn bullpen got their first opportunity to pitch in the Series and shut down the Tigers the rest of the game.

1956 World Series Preview

October 2, 1956

The 1956 World Series starts tomorrow pitting two teams, that won their respective league championships with relative ease, against each other.
The Detroit Tigers (104-50) moved into 1st place in the AL on May 15 and stayed there until the end. Detroit finished 13 games ahead of the 2nd place Chicago White Sox. They feature one of the best hitting attacks ever seen in MLB. Hitting .299 as a team, the Tigers scored an incredible 1050 runs this season, over 200 more than the 2nd highest scoring team. Detroit also features the best pitcher in baseball this season. Frank Lary went 29-7 with a 2.70 ERA. Lary had 22 complete games among his 38 starts and threw 4 shutouts.
The NL Champion Brooklyn Dodgers (99-55) had an even easier time than Detroit. They finished 19 games ahead of the 2nd place St. Louis Cardinals. The Dodgers moved into 1st place on April 23rd and except for 2 days in June, never relinquished the lead. Brooklyn had the best pitching staff in the NL and were the 2nd best offensive team (the Cardinals edged them out for that distinction).
Game 1 of the World Series will be in Brooklyn and Dodger ace Don Newcombe (25-8) will get the start against Detroit's Frank Lary (29-7). The following are the final regular season stats for both teams:
