1956 World Series Game 1

October 3, 1956

The Brooklyn Dodgers won game 1 of the 1956 WS by defeating the Detroit Tigers 8-3.
Brooklyn scored 2 runs off Frank Lary in the 1st inning, 2 runs in the 2nd, and then added 4 runs against the Detroit bullpen in the 7th. Don Newcombe went the distance for the Dodgers, getting the complete game victory. Gil Hodges drove in 4 runs to lead the Brooklyn hitting attack. Earl Torgeson and Ray Boone homered for Detroit in a losing effort.

First baseman Gil Hodges had 2 base hits and 4 RBI and Don Newcombe completed
the game without help from the bullpen at Ebbets Field where the Brooklyn
Dodgers beat the Detroit Tigers 8 to 3.
 
Brooklyn started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of
the first scoring 2 runners on 3 hits.  The big moment was provided by Hodges
who brought the crowd to their feet when he doubled bringing in two
baserunners.  Brooklyn managed 12 hits in their victory.  
 
Newcombe(1-0) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Frank
Lary(0-1) was charged with the loss.  He surrendered 4 runs and 7 hits in 6
innings.
