1956 AL Game of Note: Mantle hits #50

September 14, 1956
Mickey Mantle - Baseball Player - Biography.com
On a day the Detroit Tigers were trying to clinch the AL Pennant, Mickey Mantle and the visiting New York Yankees put a halt to any celebration by the hometown fans. The Yankees chased Detroit's rookie starter Hal Woodeshick by the 2nd inning, scoring 5 runs off him. Mickey Mantle had a key 2 run single in the 2nd and added a solo homerun in the 7th as New York won the game 7-4.  The homerun was Mantle's 50th of the season, tops in MLB this season. Detroit will have to wait until tomorrow for another shot at clinching the pennant. The Tiger's will be sending 27 game winner Frank Lary to the mound.

Don Larsen had a complete game as the New York Yankees outscored the Detroit
Tigers 7 to 4.

New York had 4 runs cross the plate in the top of the 2nd inning when they
came up with 4 base hits. That early scoring was all that Larsen(11-7)
needed. New York totaled 13 hits on the afternoon.

Hal Woodeshick(0-1) took the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 5
runs in 2 innings.
