1956 NL Game of Note: Brooklyn wins the NL Pennant!

The Brooklyn Dodgers clinched the NL Pennant today by defeating the Chicago Cubs 9-3. Don Newcombe won his 21st game of the season and Jim Gilliam launched 2 homeruns in the victory. The Dodgers will now get to defend their World Series Championship title from last season.

Second baseman Jim Gilliam knocked 2 homeruns and scored 3 times and Don
Newcombe had a complete game at Ebbets Field as the amazing Brooklyn Dodgers
beat the Chicago Cubs 9 to 3.
 
Gilliam provided much of the offense.  He cracked a solo homerun in the 1st
inning, clubbed a solo home run in the 3rd inning and banged out a single in
the 8th inning.  Brooklyn had a total of 12 hits for the game.
 
Newcombe(21-8), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Don
Kaiser(7-10) was hit with the loss.  He was knocked around by Brooklyn,
allowing 10 hits and 6 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.  
 
This win by Brooklyn continues their recent hot streak.  In their last ten
games, they have a record of 8-2.  For the season, they are a league leading
89-52.  With the loss, the Chicago ballclub's record is 68-72.
