1956 AL Game of Note: Detroit Wins the AL Pennant!

Detroit Tigers Team Photos CollectionThe Detroit Tigers defeated the Boston Red Sox 9-8 today and clinched 1st place in the AL. In a wild game that saw the Red Sox come back time after time, the Tigers finally pulled out the win with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. A single, a walk, and a run scoring double by Harvey Kuenn was what it took for Detroit to win the game and the AL Pennant. Al Kaline had a big game for the Tigers, going 4 for 5 with 2 HR and 3 RBI. Paul Foytack came on in relief to close the door against the Red Sox and got the win, his 16th of the season.

Al Kaline slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Briggs Stadium as the very
potent Detroit Tigers won in their last at-bat beating the Boston Red Sox by
the count of 9 to 8.
 
The game was won by Detroit when they scored a run in the 9th inning.  Red
Wilson lashed a single.  Earl Torgeson stepped into the batter's box and he
drew a walk.  Harvey Kuenn then doubled making Detroit the victor and
beginning a joyous home town celebration.  Detroit dominated offensively as
they scored in 6 different innings.  
 
Paul Foytack(16-9) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Fritz
Dorish(2-2) was given the loss in relief.  With this win, Detroit has a
league leading 96-46 record.  They have been 5-5 lately.  Boston has a record
of 79-64 after the loss.
