1956 NL Game of Note: Newcombe wins #20

1951: The Year Baseball Really Integrated – The Hardball TimesBrooklyn's Don Newcombe and Milwaukee's Lew Burdette squared off today in a battle of 19 game winners. It was a tight matchup until the bottom of the 8th inning when Brooklyn blew the game open by scoring 5 runs. With the 9-2 victory, Don Newcombe became the 1st 20 game winner in the NL this season.

Don Newcombe had a complete game at Ebbets Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat
the slumping Milwaukee Braves 9 to 2.
 
Brooklyn took the lead for good in the 5th inning scoring one runner.
Milwaukee had 9 hits in the game while Brooklyn had 6, but Brooklyn had the
more timely hits.  
 
The win was credited to Newcombe(20-8) who went the whole way allowing 2 runs.
Lew Burdette(19-10) took the loss.  He gave up 8 runs in 7 innings of work.
