The winning pitchers in the AL were on top of their game today. Three of the 4 games scheduled ended as shutouts. The other game only saw 1 run cross the plate for the losing team. Detroit Tiger Duke Maas (pictured) shutout Boston 9-0, Cleveland Indian Mike Garcia shutout Baltimore 1-0 with 11 K's, and New York Yankee Don Larsen whitewashed Kansas City 7-0 allowing only 2 hits. Chicago White Sox pitcher Billy Pierce picked up his 4th win of the season, completing a 15-1 victory over the Washington Senators.

George Kell went yard and had 4 RBI and Billy Pierce completed the game
without help from the bullpen at Griffith Stadium as the Chicago White Sox
belted the slumping Washington Senators by the count of 15 to 1.
Kell led the offense for Chicago. He banged out a single scoring two
baserunners in the 1st inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home
run in the 4th inning and slapped a base-hit in the 5th inning. Chicago
provided plenty of action in the 1st inning when they had 9 runs on 6 hits
and the 4th inning which saw them score 4 runs on 3 hits. Chicago totaled 15
hits on the night.
Pierce(4-0), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Dean
Stone(1-2) absorbed the loss.
CLEVELAND AT BALTIMORE

Mike Garcia reeled off a total of 11 strikeouts as the Cleveland Indians
bested the Baltimore Orioles 1 to 0 at Memorial Stadium.
Garcia(2-0) was tremendous on the mound for Cleveland. He allowed just 5 hits
and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.68. The Baltimore batters
didn't put up a fight in the bottom of the 9th.
Bill Wight(1-2) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 4 hits and 3 walks
in 5 and 2/3 innings. 'Garcia was the man tonight,' Al Lopez said. 'He had
just about every pitch working.'
KANSAS CITY AT NEW YORK

Don Larsen was on top of his game, blanking Kansas City on just 2 hits as the
New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Athletics by the score of 7 to 0 at
Yankee Stadium.
Larsen(1-3) was simply too much for the Kansas City batters. He didn't give
up much, just 2 hits and 6 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 4.64 to
3.26. New York had a total of 11 hits for the game.
Art Ceccarelli(0-1) was tagged with the loss. New York knocked him around a
bit, as he gave up 5 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Duke Maas tossed a shutout and Ray Boone had 2 base hits and 5 RBI as the
Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox by a score of 9 to 0.
Maas(1-1) pitched a solid game. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 7
hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 8.10 to 2.19. Detroit
banged out 16 hits on the afternoon.
Frank Sullivan(1-2) was given the loss. He allowed Detroit 8 runs in 6 and
2/3 innings of work.
